Mother’s Day the REEL Lifestyle Way

I wanted to create a new outlook on a REEL Lifestyle outing for Mother’s Day. I’ve got two special mothers in my life – my own Mom and my wife – and this year I realized that I didn’t want to buy either of them yet another gift that they don’t need.  I think that it’s more about quality time together than anything else. My wife and I are super active with our son, but we wanted to rope in new activities with Mom.  If you’re not close distance-wise to your Mom, these are great ideas to give to to those near her to spark up the day.

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept surrounding the REEL Lifestyle, we’re obsessed with the water and all sorts of activities that you can do in, on or around a body of water.  Whether you’re kayaking down the river, boating on the lake, paddle boarding in the ocean or fishing anywhere, we help you get the most out of living the REEL Lifestyle. No matter your mom’s age or how active your Mom is there’s a way to create a fun day for her that may be unlike anything she has been used to.  It will take a little planning and creativity on your part but it’ll be worth it.

Let’s take a look at some of the activities, how to find them, and categorized around activity level needed to make it a fun day for all.

Step one is to find a local Kayaking rental facility in your area and that’s as simple as Googling “best places to Kayak near me.”  You can also go to and click on your state and they will share with you the best spots in your state to Kayak.  (need a little input here)

Just as with Kayaking, a great way to start is by simply Googling “best places to paddleboard near me.”  In fact, many parks with lakes may even have a special Mother’s Day guided paddling event.

Don’t worry if your mom has never even paddled before.  It’s an easy to master activity especially on calm water.

Take a walk on the beach

One of the most relaxing and pleasant ways to spend some bonding time with your mom is simply walking on a beach.  We all spend so much time running around every day that we rarely take the time to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.  Choose a beach that’s close by and take a nice leisurely stroll along the water’s edge (river, lake, doesn’t matter!).  You will find that you naturally have plenty to chat about as you watch other people enjoying the waves and the sand as well.

Mom will enjoy the time she gets to spend with you, uninterrupted by the demands of everyday life.

Take Your Mom Fishing

You can catch and release, so don’t worry about that. If your Mom has never gone fishing, that’s what makes it a unique offer. Not to mention, one of the best things about fishing is that you can turn it into an all-around enjoyable and relaxing day. Perhaps start out with an early breakfast at your local breakfast joint, and a double plus is that you may avoid all the Mother’s Day traffic and get your day off to a great start.

Then choose your spot.  Whether you are going to go to a lake and fish off a boat, go out on an actual fishing trip on a chartered boat or just drop a line off the edge of a bridge, you can show your mom how easy and relaxing it can be to spend some time with a hook and a line.  Make sure you set your mom up for success with an easy to use fishing pole and do some of the dirty work for her.  Bait her hook for the first few casts and she may surprise you by braving it herself.

Bring some wine, beer, non-alcoholic drinks, picnic, books and BOOM. You’ve got an awesome fishing day!

Not every mom is going to be able to jump in a Kayak or onto a paddleboard or have the desire to fish.  No problem, there are still plenty of things to do on and around the water that can be perfect.

Consider A Day Cruise

If you live near a major body of water, chances are there are plenty of day cruises on a regular basis.  And by booking a day cruise you can most likely have a lovely meal on the boat as well.

Simply Enjoy Lunch Overlooking the Water

This final choice is probably less REEL Lifestyle than my other suggestions and you may end up running into the traditional Mother’s Day crowds.  However, the goal is to get Mom out into the fresh air and around the water.  If you’re going to have a waterfront lunch, make sure you make reservations far in advance as you’ll be with the masses.

As you can see there are many activities to choose from that will leave your Mom with some great memories long after a box of chocolates would have been eaten or the flowers wilt. I’ll bet she’ll dig the creativity!
